Carpets for airports

"Ever since the dawn of time man has separated himself from the lifeless earth beneath him with carpets. Nowhere has this renunciation of man's transience been more joyous or uplifting than in the medium of airport carpets. From Santiago to Sydney, from Bishkek to Boston, the airport carpet sings out its inviolable song, a sign of man's refusal to go drably into that dark night of international travel. Such aesthetic intimacy, poetry and passion, has for too long gone unnoticed by the modern traveler. Until now." This is when we begin to understand that...Yes! There are people in the world who care about carpets and different kinds of pavements to be found in airports from all over the world! You can even become a Become an Airport Carpeteer by simply photographing airport carpets of the world and sending them to carpetsforairports@gmail.com. Everything you need to know is here!

Become a Cricket Crawler!

If you’ve got a cellphone and a good pair of ears, you can help with the first-ever comprehensive cricket census of New York City. Biologists from the US Geological Survey are asking people from the Big Apple to help them track the city’s cricket and katydid population. Participants in the NYC Cricket Crawl will go out between dusk and midnight to record cricket calls for one minute, and then immediately send their results and location to the scientists by cellphone. Timing is very important: You will have to concentrate your efforts on the 11th September (as it is expected to rain on the 12th of September). I'd go for it if I were there! Great idea!

YouTube XL

This new youtube experience doesn't add anything new in particular appart from being a new interface made specifically for the TV. You can read about it here or just try it here. Only one question remains to be answered: Will consumers be likely to embrace the idea of watching YouTube on their televisions?

The man who is said to play like a God

Can Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians musicians in the world, bearing a 3.5 million dollar Stradivari vilolin in his hands and playing Bach pieces get your attention on a D.C. rush hour at the metro? Apparently not according to the Washington Post's article. During the 45 minutes he played, only six people out of thousands gave him a tip (he was actually able to make $32) and listened for a short while. Just two days before, this same artist had played in Boston and the cheaper tickets cost $100. After the experience Joshua Bell was interviewed and he didn't hide his disappointment. It looks like most of us can't really appreciate a work of art if we are offered a different context and if we aren't told to pay high amounts of money in well known places. Would I have stopped to listen to Joshua Bell on my way to work? To be honest I don't know...but I do wonder. If we don't have time to listen and admire one of the best violin players in the world, what other incredible experiences are we wasting as we lead our busy lifes?

"A-Punk" is a single by indie rock band Vampire Weekend, released on February 2008. The video was directed by Hammer & Tongs (the ones responsible for Blur, Pulp, R.E.M. and The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy). Very inventive clip, great song.

Voki Style

Voki is a free service that allows you to create personalized speaking avatars and use them on your blog, profile, and in email messages. Voki speaking avatars are cool and lots of fun to create. This useful concept was created by Oddcast, a New York based company that has been developing innovative user-generated media technologies for years. Since 1999, Oddcast has powered some of the web's most groundbreaking and successful campaigns including Careerbuilder's Monk-e-Mail (really fun and very easy to use) and Volkswagen's Babymaker (make a baby without actually...making a baby!)
